My Faith

My grandmother was a very religious person and was a wonderful example of how I should live my life. She attended Mize United Methodist Church in Augusta, GA.

I remember attending a few times when I was a small child, but when my parents moved to SC, we attended the Catholic Church where I attended Kindergarten. I really enjoyed attending the Catholic Kindergarten.

Eventually we moved to another town in SC where we went to church at Millbrook Baptist Church. Memory of that church has faded to only a glimmer.

After some time, I’m not sure how long, we started attending Trinity United Methodist Church. Some of the people were nice, but many were judgmental of others who were less fortunate than themselves. This saddened me greatly.

However, because I felt my grandmother wanted me to be baptized into the Methodist faith, I was baptized in March of 1978. Somehow I felt this wasn’t the right faith for me because I had always believed that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ were two separate and distinct beings.

I prayed to Heavenly Father to show me the truth and help me find the way. Shortly after that I prayer I began noticing the Mormon Missionaries riding their bicycles not far from my house. I had never seen them before. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, they never visited my home.

In July of 1978, I worked for A&P Grocery Stores and one night while mopping the floor in the dairy aisle I encountered the Mormon Missionaries.

I approached them and said I wanted to speak with them about their religion. I took the lessons and was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Although I had been less active than some, I have always felt the Mormon faith was the most truthful and accurate. The Mormon faith teaches that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are separate and distinct beings. This was the clincher for me and always has been.

Some people say they can’t believe that Joseph Smith, Jr. was visited by Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. My testimony in this part came much later in life. I am thankful that Joseph Smith, Jr. had the same feelings I did about the then current religions. I’m grateful that he had the commitment to follow Heavenly Father’s instructions and become the instrument in the restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
